Welcome to

Westminster Presbyterian Church

Fellowship 9:15 | Sunday School 9:30 | worship  10:30

Why us?

Since its organization in the year 1889, the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Decatur has grown along with our city.  The members of the church have a strong sense of loyalty to the church and the varied programs it provides for individuals and families.  Our members are found to be active in all phases of community life.

In the ministry of preaching, teaching, and serving, it is our desire to exalt Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.  It is our conviction that individuals mature in their Christian experience when they participate fully in the life and work of the church.  We believe that through our worship together, our study of the Bible, the dedication of our time, talents, and money, we grow as Christians and are enabled to extend the work of the church at home and around the world.

Our location just off 6th Avenue on Jackson St. SE near the heart of the city offers us both opportunity and challenge.  In gratitude for the sacrificial labor of those who served here in the past, we are ready to minster in God's name to the needs of our members, our community and our world.  We extend a cordial welcome to all who come to our city to become members of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and share with us in our work and service for Christ.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
— 1 Corinthians 12: 12

Our Mission

We seek to be a family of believers who love and worship God, sow and grow the faith, serve God and share Christ in our Church, our community and our world.

LOVE

Love is the foundation of any authentic relationship.  In his gospel account and the two letters which bear his name the evangelist John says a lot about the love of God.  Perhaps John’s best known and most often quoted affirmation about God and love is found in John 3:16 where Jesus declares, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

And in his letter to his fellow Christians in Colossae the Apostle Paul reminds us to clothe ourselves in the love of God because it is the love of God that binds everything together in perfect harmony.  (Colossians 3:14).

It is the love of God which created and sustains WPC.  As a congregation we seek to imitate and share that love with one another through our various congregational ministries as we seek to fulfill the great commission to go into all the world sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We hope you will join us in this grand adventure.

SOW AND GROW

“Go therefore and make disciples…”  Matthew 28:19

The metaphors of “sowing” and “growing” have long been an important image for the task of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We seek to make disciples by sowing and growing the seeds of faith in our children, youth and adults through our ministries of education and mission.  In so doing we also cultivate the spiritual growth of our congregation as we engage one another and the world in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.

WORSHIP

During his temptations in the wilderness Jesus reminds Satan, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.’” (Luke 4:8).  The worship of God is central to our life and witness as Christians and as members of Westminster Presbyterian Church.  It is when we gather together to worship God that something special takes place which does not occur in our private devotional times.  The Day of Pentecost, (Acts 2) when the Spirit of God descended upon and empowered Jesus’ disciples to proclaim the gospel, God chose to do so when they were gathered together in prayer.  Presbyterians believe prayer is the heart of worship.  We gather each Sunday morning to worship God as a congregation and to receive our weekly blessing.

COMMUNITY AND WORLD

In the opening chapter of the Acts of the Apostles Jesus says these words prior to his ascension into heaven.  “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).  This promise and mission lies at the heart of our outreach ministries, locally and globally.

Our congregation supports a number of local and global ministries.  As a member of this community we believe it is our duty to help those who are marginalized by participating in the Committee on Church Cooperation (CCC), Habitat for Humanity and by encouraging outside groups such as Al-Anon, Overeaters and others to use our facilities free of charge.

Beyond our local community Westminster Presbyterian Church supports the Presbyterian Home for Children in Talladega, AL. financially and with our Sewing mission which makes and sends dresses for young girls.

Globally, we participate in our denomination’s efforts financially.  Our sewing mission also makes and sends dresses to young girls in Ethiopia.  Our children support a young boy in Haiti through their gifts and various fund raising events.
